Penicillium islandicum

A slow-growing fungus that produces orange to red areas in a dark green colony with an yellow-orange to deep brown reverse, within fourteen days, when incubated at 25oC (77oF). It had been isolated worldwide from soil, plants, bird feathers, and flour-type foodstuffs. It is one of the most toxic fungi found in food and is the cause of Ayellow rice@. It is responsible for acute and chronic liver diseases including cirrhosis and carcinoma.
