Paecilomyces species
A rapidly-growing fungus that produces a white, gray-green, violet or yellowish-brown to tan colony with a white or brown reverse, within three days, when incubated at 25oC (77oF). It is found worldwide and is common. It can be isolated from soil, swamps, dunes, plants, composite, animal dung, wood pulp and paper, insects, and bird feathers. Rarely, it can be an opportunistic human pathogen causing wood trimmer’s disease, humidifier associated illnesses, and allergic disease.
